Sonrió y comenzó a hablar.

- Oh no...

Chapter 2

At the end of the dinner, dozens of servants hurried to clean the tables and to withdraw them to widen the space at the center of the garden. The dances would resume. The first one was begun by the kings followed by their children and the courtiers.

- Was it completely necessary to come armed to the dance? - Sofia complained since while dancing with her brother, the sheathed sword was hindering. - you weren't with it before the banquet -.
- That's because I was dancing with mom. - He looked at her as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. - The troops are on guard, it's my duty to be on guard as they are.-
- Do you know why the king has stated it like this? - They always spoke of their father in that manner. - Does he ever give them a rest? -

Leonardo started laughing and they continued dancing. By the end of a few dance pieces, the kings withdrew. The king came by his counselor, who was dancing with Ophelia and took him aside.

- Have you set out everything just as I ordered? -
- Yes your majesty. The troops have fallen over the garden and I've sent several guards to the castle gates. Everything is in order.-
- Just as I expected, Porcus and Aix, in war doesn't seem logic. Has there been any news to whether the reason of the invasions?-

The royal counselor denied it with his head. The king looked at his surroundings; maybe they were small struggles after all. Most of the guests danced and others walked around the paths of the adjoining gardens, vastly illuminated. His children and Ophelia talked with the queen, besides the fountain.

- Dear, after the king gives out the prize, I'll introduce you to your fiancé, prince Nicholas from Silia - Said the Queen as she took her daughter Sofia's hand, and she agreed in silence.

Ophelia suddenly remembered she had left her pet locked in her room. It was a little pig that was originally disposed as a new year's dinner, but she had terminantely denied to it's killing and to make sure that nothing would happen to it, she took care of it, as it was still young. This last thing being secretly since animals weren't permitted inside of the castle. She had to take it out, or it would wake up the kids.

- I forgot something in my room... excuse me - she gave a small bow which was responded by the rest and she started walking towards the castle, humming the songs from the dances.

At that moment, to a signal of the counselor, Veanna approached a wooden platform placed besides the main fountain and sounded the trumpets to announce the handing of the trophy, and a shiver shuddered Sofia. Meeting her fiancé made her more nervous than what she wanted to admit and she kept smiling to conceal it.

Leonardo surrounded her with an arm and offered the other one to his mother and this way they approached the king, who was standing on the platform, with the counselor and the winner to his right. The queen and their children, standed by his left.

Everyone surrounded the platform, the king heaved his arms and the trumpets stopped their sound. He smiled and began to speak.

- My beloved Ceryle... – noises coming from a commotion afar could be heard, the crows posed in the near trees began to squawk - ...the peak of this celebration has arrived, and now it's time to deliver...

The king stopped speaking. Noise from footsteps, swords and cries could be heard increasingly. Several people turned their heads trying to discover the source of the sound. And when the king was about to take word again, an arrow crossed the sky and lodged in his heart. The monarch plumetted in front of the horrified looks of everyone present. Sofia saw as her father fell and how her mother fell while embracing the motionless body. An arrow injured the queen by the back. Leonardo took Sofia and fell to the floor out of the platform.

Fear took over as armored men with shields of another kingdom made way between the army of Ceryle and bursted into the gardens. People began to run, desperately trying to escape going deep into the gardens of the castle. They shouted and fell, when an arrow struck them.

The men took the torches that lit to defend themselves and the soldiers of Ceryle already crashed their swords against the enemies. Leonardo took out his sword and gave it to Sofia. Their gazes met and sensed the terror in the eyes of one another.

- Sofi, I want you to go for the kids and escape as far as you can – he said taking her by her shoulders.
- No... I don't want to go without you – she stuttered , she had the sword in her hands and shivered from her feet to her head.

Leonardo gave a kiss on her forehead.

- TAKE THEM AND RUN! - He said as he pushed her towards the castle.

Leonardo turned to take a last look on their parents and watched Sofia as she ran towards the castle who looked at him for one last time, without stopping.

There were at least two hundred invaders who showed no mercy, attacking children, women and men all the same. The soldiers of Ceryle fought as did also the present men, armed with anything that was to be at hand, but it seemed that the enemy’s army was never endless. More and more kept increasing the number of the bloody battle. Leonardo fought by the side his army, arming himself with the sword of a fallen soldier.

A hooded man approached Veanna, who was still standing on the platform, foreign to everything.
- I did not know that this was to be like this... – She reproached the man that did not show his face.
He approached her and whispered at her with a soft voice that did not allow contradictions.

- Limit yourself to what I have asked you... - He said, as he pointed at the royal counselor, who ran while yelling her daughter's name, searching her desperately.

The archer, nodding, tightened her arch and shot. The man smiled pleased when he saw him fall. And as soon as he saw the fallen monarchs, his smile stressed.

~

Sofia tried to go inside the castle, to the main hall, only to see that it's interior was burning. She listened to her brother's cries and she too shouted in despair. She had to get to them. The staircases were already obstructed by beams that had fallen off the ceiling, even though she managed to go up until the first landing, where she saw herself surrounded by flames, since the curtains from the large windows and several paintings were already consuming.

She couldn't go up any further, there was too many smoke that she couldn't see anything. She kept shouting her brother's names, crying. She couldn't hear anything anymore. Until she felt someone take her by the arm.

It was Ophelia, she had reached her. She coughed and looked dazed. Sofia took her hand and broke the window with her sword. A rush of air went in and flared up the flames around them. Both jumped and fell without harm, there wasn't much height.

- Let's hide in the forest! - Said Ophelia taking her hair off her face and incorporating herself.

Sofia nodded, and took her hand so they wouldn't separate and began to run. The forest was not far, but they had to be careful that no one saw them and no arrow or rock hit them, from the ones that were flying from everywhere. They had already crossed half of the gardens when they stopped abruptly, Ophelia saw between some bushes her father.

All color from her face disappeared instantly. She didn't even have enough voice to scream. She kneeled besides her father body and touched his still warm face. An arrow had injured him in the stomach and there was a puddle of blood around him. Tears started streaming down her face silently.

Sofia saw an arrow bury in the soil between them. She turned around gripping her sword with her left hand, and saw the archer that had shot preparing to do it again and behind him, more enemy’s soldiers approaching.

- Oh no... - exclaimed Sofia, reaching Ophelia and tapping her shoulder.

Ophelia kissed her father on his cheek and stood up; taking the hand that Sofia had stretched out for her and continued running.
It wasn't long till they reached the forest, still it seemed everlasting. The soldiers that followed them were intercepted by soldiers of Ceryle. While they continued running, arrows flew by their sides and cries were heard of those who were injured and children crying. Just before arriving to the limits of the gardens, an enemy soldier cut their way. Sofia moved Ophelia behind herself and fought against the soldier. He injured her side almost immediately, Sofia was very nervous. She took her right hand over her wound and continued defending herself and just as she had the chance she cut off the soldier's hand with her sword. He fell defenseless, shouting in pain.

Sofia looked around for Ophelia, and then she saw her, standing in between two thick trees, making way through intricate vines and branches. But she couldn't see how she was doing it. By the time she got near her, both of them could already pass through, so they did and they began going deep in the dark, getting lost of sight.

The enemy’s soldiers took off as fast as they had arrived. Neither the hooded man nor Veanna were there anymore.
Lost in silence, the castle and it's gardens consumed in flames and everything that was left from the celebration were lifeless bodies.

Capítulo 1

Prefacio

¿No te has arreglado

- Hija, hoy conocerás a tu prometido.

Preface

This adventure takes place rather than in distant lands, in a distant time. An era whose geography was divided into kingdoms with their kings, princes, princesses and warriors. Kingdoms formed by counties, where the people were distributed.

Mysterious diseases and creatures hidden in unexplored forests. Skills and powers granted long before birth at random. Arrows and swords defend the honor and hurt the pride of enemies. Blue Skies and extensive grounds that seem diluted to infinity over the horizon, frame the beginning of the voyage.

Chapter 1

In Ceryle Castle, the days went by slowly, until the last days of summer, when preparations for the festivities began. It was the king’s birthday and as was the tradition, it was celebrated with a great feast and an archery tournament to which were invited archers from all around the kingdom and even neighboring kingdoms. This year, the number of participants had declined considerably since there were wars between the kingdoms of south, wars to which the king of Ceryle bluntly refused to take part of because of his not so numerous army.

So everyone in town was preparing their best clothes for the feast, to which each person in the kingdom was invited. It would be held in the gardens of the castle, after the archery tournament that night. The queen personally supervised the elaboration of the banquet, while the king walked the gardens enjoying the company of his smaller children, David who was eleven years old, Joshua eight and Esmeralda, the smallest of the royal family, six years old. The three of them ran between fountains and wide corridors formed by shrubs chasing a pink pig, mascot of the daughter of the king’s advisor, Ophelia, who sat on the edge of one of the fountains, with flowers in her lap, weaving garlands, while his father and the king talked as usual.

Esmeralda, tired of running went into the library of the castle, where she knew she would find her older siblings, Leonardo and Sofia, drawing maps. Leonardo twenty-two years old, was the heir to the throne and captain of the kingdom’s army, he dominated the sword as no one ever could, qualities that Sofia admired and learned from him. Sofia to her nineteen years, was distinguished by spending her evenings reading and in spite of her mother’s wishes, she refused to learn sewing and embroidery arguing that her hands were to be used only to sustain a sword or a book.

The relationship between Sofia and Leonardo was very close and they spent many evenings like that, making maps of the castle, including the forest whose boundaries began at the end of the gardens. Nobody knew this forest because its trees joined in an intricate vine through which few people dared to go through, sometimes neither the light would pass through it, which increased the curiosity of the brothers regarding the secrets to within it.

Esmeralda sat on the lap of her sister, who began braiding affectionately her hair without interrupting her conversation with Leonardo, about the map they were drawing.

- How many fountains are there in the garden? I thought we had already counted them - said Leonardo who frowned his forehead, trying to make memory.
- But in recent months, Mom commanded they build more… here was the number… - claimed Sofia, stirring a pile of papers on the table.
- There is something in your hair - noted Esmeralda, reaching with her hands above her sister, drawing from among the tufts of hair, a piece of parchment.
- So there was where I left it - Sofia smiled, unfolding it - twenty-four fountains. I counted them this morning.
- Did you notice that the roses are all open? - asked Esmeralda, tugging her sister’s sleeve.
- Yes, I saw them, red are your favorite, right? - said Sofia, with her arm around the girl, while Leonardo was still drawing.
- But the roses are almost at the end of the gardens, with whose permission did you go that far, Esmeralda? – said Leonardo without taking his eyes off his drawing - you know that you shouldn’t go that far or you will get lost in the woods and you will be eaten by whatever lives in it…
- That’s not true! You’re so mean! - Esmeralda exclaimed angrily, and Leonardo played with her hair then smiled. The girl maintained her expression of concern - There's nothing living there, is there Sofi?

Right then, the door of the library was burst open and all three brothers turned their heads. The queen approached them, with a frowned upon her.

- Leonardo, stop scaring your sister. Sofia? You’re not ready?
- Come on Esme, our dresses are upstairs – said Sofia as she stood up.
- I have to go to the garden for something first - responded Esmeralda as she took the hand of her brother – Come with me?

Leonardo lifted her on his back and they headed to the gardens, while Sofia and the Queen walked up the stairs to the rooms.

~

At sunset, candles and torches lighted up the garden where everything was already prepared for the celebration. Even though the sun had not been completely concealed in the distance, forest boundaries appeared in complete darkness making a black line around the garden.

Cirsium, the forest of constant nights, had an inhabitant after all. A young girl who had arrived there a long time ago, whose white skin highlighted particularly in the dense darkness that surrounded her. Whoever came to see her, was convinced to have seen a spectrum. One more reason for those who would like to enter, desist, while the forest at twilight would remain a mystery.

In the main square of the county adjacent to the castle people crowded to see the end of the tournament. Besides the people, there was the presence, in the royal box, of the kings and their eldest son. The noise was increasing and there were a lot of words around the finalists. The first, an archer known to the kingdom and was facing a young girl who until now remained undefeated, born in the kingdom of Hyla, northeast of Ceryle. It was not common for a woman to have such extraordinary skills in archery, none had reached the finals in previous years.

The place was illuminated by a huge bonfire, which was part of the litmus test, which consisted of firing an arrow that should pass through the bonfire only to light with fire a ring located 10 meters away from this.

The native archer would go first, who had preference because of his birthplace. The square remained silent and the only sound that could be heard was the crackle of wood at the bonfire. He fired his arrow, which crossed the bonfire, but flew long above the ring, without the ignition. The man retreated.

The young girl from Hyla, Veanna, took a step forward and tensed her bow. In her eyes the fire was reflected while she looked serene. She fired and the arrow marked a perfect trajectory to the stake, and already lit, burned the ring causing ovations from everyone there.

The people then went to the castle, with the winner of the tournament and the royal family.

In the east tower of the castle, Ophelia and Sofia were finishing dressing themselves up. Ophelia seventeen years, had grown close to the royal family and had always lived in the castle along with his father. Esmeralda, looked at them while sitting on the bed, admiring their dresses, Ophelia’s dress was blue, while Sofia’s dress was purple with golden brocade.

- When I grow up, I will have dresses just like yours - said Esmeralda – but they will be yellow.
- You will have all the dresses you want. - said Ophelia smiling, brushing the long hair that came down to her waist.

Just then, there was a knock on the door, and Joshua and David entered.

- Look how handsome you look! - said Sofia.
- I came to give you this – said Joshua, approaching her, extending her a pink rose bud.
- It’s very pretty, brother! Thank you very much - Sofia took the rosebud and hugged the child. With a back comb she put it in her hair. - Now I’m ready.

David, approached Ophelia timidly, offering her a white rose. Ophelia then seized it in her clothing and the child blushed when she gave him a kiss on his cheek.

- You like Ophelia! - Esmeralda accused him, laughing.
- Shut up! – said David as he began to chase her down the stairs and Joshua followed them.

They went down to the main hall where there were courtiers and musicians, finishing getting ready. The evening began quietly with music and dances. The king danced with the queen and their eldest daughter. While dancing with her, he took the opportunity to talk with her about her future.

- Daughter, today you will meet your fiancé. -
- But… I thought that this would not be until a few months… - Sofia's smile disappeared from her face.
- But he has attended tonight, and I promised to introduce you. He insists that you wed as soon as possible… do not put on that face and now go dance with your brother.

Leonardo, who was dancing with his mother, approached and continued dancing with Sofia, while the king was withdrawing with the queen.

- Why that face Sofi?

Sofia clued her brother up to what was happening. She knew that once married, she would never again see her brothers or parents; she would have to live in her husband’s kingdom, far from there.

Both brothers retired from the dance to accompany to their rooms, their younger siblings because since they were young, they’d have to dine apart to rest and retire early. Sofia tucked in her three brothers and gave them each a kiss on the forehead, thinking that she still had a little more time with them and that she might try to persuade her betrothed to hold off the date of the wedding.

The banquet began. The tables were arranged in the gardens, where the table of honor was reserved for the kings, their eldest descendants, the royal counselor and the winner of the tournament, whom the king had found very interesting because of her skills and confidence in herself.
