- Realmente no tengo hambre...
- ¡No has tenido hambre en días!

- Ah bueno... mi padre me enseñó.
- No puedo seguir aquí.

Chapter 4

Flames engulfed the place. The ceiling, as well as the walls, started collapsing; broken glasses from what was left of the vials from the shelves, were already consumed in flames.

Sofia woke up abruptly, drenched in a cold sweat. Her heart was racing so fast, she was having a difficult time breathing. It took her a few moments to realize it had only been a dream. The interior of the cabin was in silence and in darkness. Ophelia slept quietly by her side. When she was slowly getting herself up, she distinguished in the corner the silhouette of Veanna.

She got up, trying not to make much noise .The pain from her wound had subsided considerably and it felt somewhat better although a bit uncomfortable for her skirt was now in shreds.

Outside, she could not distinguish if it were by day or night; everything was still immersed in darkness. She wondered how far the castle would be. A part of her wanted to return in spite of knowing that no one or nothing would be there. When tears began to crowding themselves in her eyes, she listened footsteps behind her and raised her glance, looking in the eyes of the young person who had sheltered them.

- I see you’re feeling better - She said.

Sofia took a moment to observe her, since she hadn’t had an opportunity to do it. She was very pale and shorter in height than her. Her gesture was cold and lacking a smile, but a contrasting warmth in her glance inspired confidence to her. She repaired in her silence.

- Yes, thank you very much – she hurried answering and added a bit ashamed - I’m sorry, but I don’t know your name.
- Brilmeneliel - the young girl answered and Sofia repeated it in silence. – It can just be Bril.
- Thanks a lot for all you’ve done for us Bril – said Sofia gratefully.
- No… really it’s nothing…- Bril said right away, somewhat uncomfortable. - …How did you end up in the middle of the woods? – she asked with curiosity, but seeing how Sofia’s face went pale, she desisted. – Sofia, right? - She nodded- Let’s go inside, if you want to get better you better eat.

Without waiting for an answer she led her to a table located next to her bed, at the end of the cabin. She lit up a pair of candles. Seated Sofia in a chair and put in the table a fruit bowl, from where she took an apple while sitting down in front of her whereas Sofia chose a peach.

- I’m the princess of Ceryle. – She said breaking the silence, after she finished.

Upon Bril’s surprised gesture, Sofia raised her left hand and took off a ring with the shield of Ceryle from her annular finger, putting it on the table. While she observed it, Sofia stood up and headed towards Ophelia, returning with a sword and putting it also on the table. Finally, while taking a seat, she took off the rose bud from her tangled hair. Having the three objects on the table, she took a deep breath and continued, before the kind glance from Bril.

- These are the only things I have left from my family… - although the sensation of having a knot in her throat was unbearable, she felt it was necessary to assimilate it. - They were killed during the attack to the castle. While fleeing was how we ended in the forest… - she cried without interruption, letting her tears soak her face and neck, marking their way down between her dirty face by dirt.

Bril let her cry, limiting herself to watch her without knowing how or what to say or do. Sofia’s shoulders shook in a now uncontrollable weeping. Once started she could no longer stop it. Bril clumsily put her hand over her and a little while after she abruptly stood up to bring her a glass of water. She had spent much time living alone that she had almost forgotten how it was to coexist with another person.

When Ophelia and Veanna woke up, they were surprised with the scene before them, Sofia and Bril by the table, the first one crying and second one holding her hand with a gesture of sincere empathy.

Ophelia approached and embraced Sofia, also beginning to cry. Veanna remained standing up, leaned by some shelves and somewhat different, and visibly uncomfortable. They remained in silence, without hearing anything besides the sobs and murmurs from the breeze, shaking the leaves from the trees. The exact time could not be know, for time did not exist like it is inside that forest, not being able to distinguish day from night.

When there wasn’t any strength left to cry, Sofia entered in a serenity state that although at that time it was a relief, it would be reason for concern later. Ophelia cleaned her face with her sleeve from her dress.

- Could we fix something to eat? – She asked, as she in an affectionate way, stroked Sofia’s hair.

Bril agreed standing up. Veanna occupied her place, alleviated when seeing them calmer. Following Bril’s instructions, Ophelia removed from the cupboard a basket full of vegetables and, with Sofia’s help, she started cutting them on the table.
The stipulation for remaining only one night was not fulfilled, because Bril approved that they stayed with her at least until they recovered from their wounds. Days went by, whose course they learned to distinguish by the song of a bird that usually nested in the nearby branches of the trees, according to what Bril said to them.

~
- Sofía, you must eat something - reprimanded Ophelia, on the brink of anger.
- I’m not really hungry…
- You haven’t been hungry in days! – she said impaciently.
- Well, I mean… all we’ve had to eat are vegetables, vegetable soup and more vegetables… - said Veanna – You can’t blame her, there should be more food variety…
- No, it’s not like that! –Sofia rushed to say, upon seeing Bril’s gesture, with her gathered frown.
- Well I have gotten sick of it… – Veanna continued. Ignoring that Bril was standing just behind her - …World there happen to be a chicken around here?
- Of course not! – answered Bril, visible mad.
- Well…I’ve never really hunted before…. But I’m pretty sure I could match a nice pair of bird… Do you know how to cook them, Ophelia? – Veanna hadn’t noticed Bril’s voice tone.
- Animals won’t be eaten here! – Bril said sharply, Veanna turned towards her, watching her a tad surprised.
- How is that possible? – she asked.
- Maybe Bril’s vegetarian – said Ophelia trying to maintain peace, as she saw a discussion approaching itself.
- I am – Bril said agreeing, giving her back to them to continue on preparing the rest of the food.
- In that case... why don’t we try baking some bread? – suggested Ophelia and upon noticing that there were no answer from Bril, she supposed there wasn’t any problem.
- I’ll go for more wood, we’ll need it… – said Sofia, standing up, and leaving the cabin.
Ophelia sighed. She wanted Sofia to feel better, probably because that way she could take off the oppression feeling that never left her. She had hoped that from taking care of Sofia and obtaining that she was calm, she herself would arrive at that state.

Thus was how it occurred to her to take the rose bud from Sofia, while she slept. She had to wait for until that moment, because during the day it was a rare occasion that she separated herself from those three appraised objects. She hadn’t stuck her rose on her hair again, afraid of harming it.

Holding the rose bud in between her hands, Ophelia made it open itself, becoming an open rose that would never die out. With care she left it in front of Sofia so that it would be the first thing she’d see as soon as she’d wake up.

Upon waking up and realizing what happened, Sofia embraced her in a thankful hug while Ophelia, again put her rose in her hair.

~

- These last couple of days there had been a certain chill in the air, weather is changing and it worries me that Sofia continues using that dress, the blood stains are not going to fade because we would have to wash it with well-taken care of so that it doesn’t finish ripping apart, all that without mentioning that she and Ophelia are practically walking barefoot… - commented Veanna with Bril while on the table, mean while the alluded ones were collecting fruits outside, in the trees bordering the cabin.

Bril, while holding a cup with both hands, gave another sip at her tea. Her silence usually meant that she was not in discord with they were saying. Upon entering Ophelia and Sofia, both with the baskets full of red apples, she noticed that in fact from their fabric slippers and golden brocade there was very little left. Veanna and she hadn’t had that problem, since they used boots, manly but comfortable and resistant.

As soon as Sofia left her basket in the pantry, she left again. Her mood and appetite had improved, but she still seemed a bit distant and reflexive, so she spent most of the time outside where she felt more relaxed, taking long strolls around the area or practicing her fencing. Fighting with an imaginary opponent. Veanna liked observing her because she found it an interesting way to fight although in her personal choice she continued preferring the archery, which hurt her not to be practicing, since she wasn’t able to maintain balance for a long time while balancing herself on a single foot.

So, convalescent, Veanna spent time seated within the cabin, observing Ophelia preparing jam following Bril’s instructions, who found very pleasant having someone whom to teach all she knew about kitchen and conserves. Ophelia on the other hand maintained satiated her necessity to stay occupied, so that she couldn’t contemplate the possibility of assimilating what had had recently happened.

- Do you happen to have spare fabrics? – Veanna asked Bril in one of those evenings.

- What for?

- I want to make a dress for Sofia, I feel she’s going to fall sick if she keeps wandering like that through the forest.
- You know how to make dresses? – asked Ophelia, rather surprised, while Bril rummaged the shelves from her wardrobe.
- Of course, I’ve made everything I’ve got on. – She answered proudly. – Except the boots, which were a gift from Hallacair – she added with a smile.
- I World have never guessed. – said Ophelia examining the seams from Veanna’s cape with interest. – I know how to sew and embroider, but I’ve never made anything bigger than a handkerchief.
- I may not be very versatile, but I think I can manage a simple dress.
- I hope you can make something out of this – said Bril, laying on top of the table many scraps of fabric. – Not even one is useful to make a whole piece, but I think that joining them, we could make one.
- Fortunately, they are very different in color - said Ophelia enthusiastic – I’m going for Sofia, so we can start taking measures!

Sofia received the news excitedly and upon that day, Sofia started desenvolving more each day. She was beginning to get out of that trance she seemed to be stuck.

- Sofia, how was it that you learned fencing? - asked Veanna with curiosity – it’s not something that is usually seen in women, much less in women from royalty.
- How was it that you learned archery? It isn’t common either. – Sofia responded evasively, she still wasn’t ready to talk about her family.
- Ah well... my father taught me. You see, I’m the eldest daughter and since my mother has never had a steady health, my father took care of me most of the time. She smiled as the memories flowed her mind - He taught me how to fish, ands we’d spend whole afternoons in Zizia lake, in the boat we made ourselves…
Ophelia began to remember her own father and felt a knot in the mouth of her stomach, but once again she did not allowed herself to think on that matter

- So you’re not from Ceryle then? – asked Bril-

- No, I was born and raised in Hyla - answered Veanna. – I had never been on another kingdom until now that I entered the contest, though it wasn’t amongst my plans at the beginning when I left home.

They continued eating in silence so that the soup didn’t cool off. When they finished, Bril started reading while Ophelia made handkerchiefs with the pieces of cloth that had been left over from Sofia’s new dress. Veanna was making slow movements with her hurt ankle, which began to recover and was only bandaged now.

Sofia was seated in a corner looking at her sword and ring. After a long silence, she raised her gaze to the others with an anguished look on her eyes.
- I can’t stay here any longer.
