Capítulo 6

- ¿Veanna?

No volví a verlo después.

- ¿No estarás enferma? No vuelvo a hacerle caso a Bril... ¿y si soy alérgica? No, no creo, me hubiera puesto realmente mal.

– empezó a decir Sofía

- Ah no, ¡tú no me digas nada! Quiero regresar, ¡quiero ir a casa!

¡HARTA! Yo no pedí...

- ¿A dónde has ido?

Chapter 6
- Veanna? – called Sofia.

- What…what happened? – She responded, coming back from her trance.

- Nothing, it’s just that you stopped y stayed still without saying anything all of the sudden. Are you all right?

- Yeah, I’m just a little bit tired, that’s all.

- Maybe we should stop to get something to eat- suggested Ophelia – I’m felling a little bit tired too.

- Seems fine by me – accepted Bril.

In those days, they lived off fruits and anything they where to gather on the trail. They carried water to collect water as soon as it started raining, fortunately it had been raining frequently, for which they where grateful, even though it made them pass through rough time like being all covered by mud all the time. Without mentioning that without having a steady roof over their heads, they were frequently woken up by the rain in the middle of their sleep.

Even with all that, their good humor and enthusiasm hadn’t gotten down. Sofia and Veanna had gotten well quickly, having frequent chats about archery and sword fighting. Ophelia remained in silence most of the time trying to make peace with her mind, which became more difficult every time. Veanna couldn't look at her the same way and she felt ashamed of what she had done, but she couldn't find the courage to tell her what had happened. So she took upon herself to do anything that was in her hands to compensate her, until the right moment came, to tell her the truth.

As they got to know each other better, they became more united, even Bril who began to feel comfortable around them. Those two months they spent together seemed longer. Their friendship had been born implicitly, almost as a mutual agreement.

~

They had managed to travel far in a very short amount of time. According to Bril in three days they would already be near the end of the forest, and there forth the town wouldn't be even half a day of travel away.

When they slept, they took turns to guard. Even though Bril was certain that there wasn't anyone else besides them inside the forest, Veanna insisted on taking that precaution.

Bril was lying down on the ground beside a tree while the rest slept. Her shift had just begun and besides the sounds of an animal passing by, there was silence everywhere, until she began to hear Sofia talking, at first, in whispers, then in screams. She couldn't make out was she was saying, but she sounded afraid. She approached her carefully trying to be careful not to wake up Ophelia or Veanna.

- Sofia? Sofia... wake up... – she whispered, shaking her gently.

- I don't want to leave without you... – repeated Sofia in between sobs without waking up.

Bril sighted. It wasn't the first time she had heard her crying in her dreams. She was about to shake her once again when Sofia returned to her silent slumber, so she left he to rest.
Every nightmare was like reviving the night of the attack. Sofia didn't comment anything about it, but tried to have the night guards more often as long as she wouldn't have to sleep.

- Sofia, you’ve got really dark circles around your eyes - observed Veanna - you look like a raccoon - she added in joke while they picked up their things after sleeping for a while.

- I haven't been able to sleep well. - she answered grumpily, shifting her hair and catching up Ophelia and Bril, who had begun walking, without feeling like talking about it.

Veanna shrugged and ran up to them. They began getting word out by the routine, but they calmed themselves by thinking that there wasn't much time left until they got back into civilization. Veanna missed her home and she even missed Hallacair. But she couldn't help but fell excited for whatever there was to come.

Sofia's mind was only on her nightmares. She felt a deep hole she knew she would never fill. She had sent all her remaining strength in taking back her kingdom, that way her family's memory wouldn't end up in the hands of whom had took them away from her.

- It was my brother who taught me fencing - said Sofia towards Veanna in a better tone after a long silence - you asked me, remember?

- Ah! – She wasn't expecting it, but she was glad the silence had been broken.

- Yes, I remember.

- Ever since I was 7 years old and he was 13. We used to spend whole days practicing in the gardens.

- And if they weren't doing that, they would always be in their library drawing maps - added Ophelia - but they were always together.

- Not always, sometimes he would get so irritating... but even our discussions seemed fun to me - said Sofia smiling - but he was the one who knew me better. Esme, David and Joshua spent their time with Ophelia. Although, they would always come back to me so I would read them stories.

She missed her family so much; it made her difficult to talk about them, but while talking about them she realized it was better than to leave them forgotten. She began to feel better. Her family would remain by her side, as long as she let herself remember them.

- Sofi... What happened to Leonardo? He wasn't hurt on the platform, was he? - asked Ophelia, she had had the doubt for a long time now.

- No, he stayed fighting - she answered after a sigh - he sent me after our brothers to the castle and that was where I found you. I didn't see him after that.

- That means there still is the possibility that he's still alive isn't it? – asked Veanna, but upon seeing her friend's eyes lit up with hope, she regretted - I mean… there's still a chance.

Bril and Ophelia looked at her upset. A comment like that didn’t seem prudent to them.

Maybe... maybe he was able to run! – Sofia’s eyes had lit up – I hadn’t thought of that! – the uncertainty in the eyes of the others, made her come back to earth – If he’s still alive, we'll find him sooner or later.

She kept silent, trying to stay calm. Se tried not to give herself hopes, but she could keep her heart from beating excited.

~

- No! Ugh! Get it away from me! – yelled Veanna scared.

- If only you remained still! – protested Ophelia while trying to clear a cicada off her neck.

Bril and Sofia had gone away for a while to look for firewood, to ignite a bonfire. The temperature had descended considerably and the cold weather was no longer bearable. Veanna and Ophelia had laid down to rest, until Veanna felt the bug on her neck, which made her stand up startled.

- There… – Ophelia had the cicada on her hand. Staring at it with great interest.

- How can you touch it? It’s disgusting – exclaimed Veanna shuddering – get it away from me.

- I can’t believe it – said Ophelia after leaving the bug on a tree – you yelling over a little bug? I thought you weren’t afraid of anything...!

- I am not scared of anything! … Just insects... – she admitted – it’s stupid, I know, but I can’t avoid it.

- ...well – she shrugged her shoulders and returned to seat on a heavy knotted root.

Veanna crossed her arms and wrinkled her nose. Ophelia closed her eyes for a moment. She felt exhausted.

- They’ve been gone for too long... – observed Veanna alter a long silence. – I wish we could get to town soon; I’m tired of only seeing trees. I wonder why Bril decided to live here all alone, in a place like this.

As a response, Ophelia only shrugged her shoulders again, without even opening he eyes.

- You’ve been too quiet lately – said Veanna seriously – It even seems to me that you’re not convinced with…. even being here.

- I don’t know what you’re talking about – she answered irritated and added in a low voice, feeling a knot on her throat - … It’s not as if I had a choice.

- Veanna, surprised by her tone and answer, decided to stay silent even though her purpose lasted shortly, since she wasn’t in the mood to remain silent.

- What if you’re sick? The other day that we ate that fruit, my stomach didn’t let me rest all night, did you? I’m not going to hear Bril words again… what if I’m allergic? No, I don’t think so; I would have gotten really sick. Oh how I miss eating meat…

- Veanna, I’m not in the mood for talking and frankly neither of hearing you – said Ophelia with the little patience she had left.

- Well, you don’t have to act that way.

- Well what if I want to act this way?! Maybe I do want to act like this! – she exclaimed standing up, and facing her.

- What’s wrong? – asked Sofia bemused, along with Bril, whom where carrying thick branches.

- All of you think this is fun! – She blamed furiously, pointing at them – I didn’t ask for any of this!

- But Ophe…- started to say Sofia.

- Oh no, don’t you dare tell me anything! You haven’t thought of anyone except yourself, what about me? I want to go back, I want to go home! – She had her eyes full of tears and her voice sounded more high-pitched than usual.

Sofia and Veanna looked at her without knowing what to say. The first one seemed stunned by the accusation, but she didn’t seem mad.

- But you agreed, besides, there is no place to go back – Veanna reminded her.

- And what do you know about what I feel? What could you know? All of this is easy for you, you don’t care about anything!

- Ophelia, you don’t know what you are saying; you don’t have to talk at her that way – reacted Sofia.

- Sure, defend her! I’m sick of this sham, you hear me?! SICK! I didn’t ask… - she didn’t finish her phrase, since Bril, who had stayed silent the whole time, approached her and slapped her, by everyone surprise.

- Stop feeling sorry for yourself. – ordered Bril firmly, while Ophelia took her hand to her check and looked at her furiously – What happened isn’t going to change, no matter how many times you deny it Ophelia, you have to live with that.

Ophelia gave her back to them and turned away, sitting under a great tree a few feet away from them. Sofia debated within herself between following her or not.

- Give her a moment – said Bril reading her expression – it’s probably the first time she’ll handle reality.

Bril wasn’t wrong. Safe behind the big roots of the tree, Ophelia tried to find sense in her thoughts. She wanted to cry, she felt guilty for not having done it after her father’s and everyone she knew as family’s death. It’s not that she didn’t feel the loss, but she had to preoccupy. She had to take care of herself and once she had an idea of what she would do, she would give herself time to cry.

She knew that it wasn’t other’s fault was she was feeling. But taking everything upon them was her last resort before confronting it herself, now inevitable. Taking a hold of her life wouldn’t be as hard, if she at least had an idea of where to begin. Sofia had a cause and even though she supported her, she needed a cause of her own. Like Veanna, who supported Sofia, but had other plans herself, she was more independent. She knew no one was forcing her to stay with them, but she didn’t have anywhere else to go, like Bril. No, she would follow Sofia, but she wouldn’t depend on her, nor she would be a burden for anyone else.

Having this train of thoughts, she fell asleep. Consternation hadn't left her face yet, but when Veanna came near her to cover her with a cot, she noticed relived that she was sleeping peacefully.

~

While walking they noticed they weren’t far from leaving the forest, since light started coming through the trees more and more each time.

Ophelia kept being silent, obviously resented by Bril slap on her cheek, but still ashamed by the way she had acted. The rest didn’t want to force anything so they decided to give her some space, afraid she might get angry again and leave them. But when they noticed she was calm again, they kept their trail as usual.

Veanna felt excited as they exited the forest, at the perspective of being able to distinguish between day and night again, and everyone started to get excited too. Sofia felt nervous about what would be Sorex’s situation and doubting whether she would receive support from them to help Ceryle but, even though, she couldn’t help laughing upon Veanna’s comments, or Bril’s faces who, surprisingly, was having fun. Even Ophelia forgot a little about her uncertainty as she felt excited of coming into town also.

- We’ve been so long without light; I wonder if it won’t affect us once we get out of here – said Veanna looking at the light that slipped through the branches.

- Of course not, don’t be foolish – answered Bril without care.

- You are the one who should be most worried; you’ve been living in the dark for years! It has been years, hasn’t it?

- Yes, but it’s not as if I hadn’t traveled anywhere in all this time.

- Where have you gone? – asked Sofia interested.

- For example, the town where we are headed.

- To meet someone? Eh, eh? – said Veanna smiling.

- Of course not! – answered Bril, silencing her with her gaze. – besides, it’s none of your concern.

- How boring. I can’t imagine living like that, all alone. – continued Veanna ignoring Bril – you must have had a good motive… but oh well, I’m hungry.

- I’ll go look for apples of something. – said Bril while the rest looked for a place to rest.

- Want me to go with you? – asked Veanna.

- I don’t want more inquiries. I’ll go alone. – said shrugging her shoulders and began to walk.

They sat on a circle on the ground and shuffled in their bags for goods.

- We only have half a jar of jam, but there is no bread – said Ophelia lifting the jar in front of her eyes. – Though I can’t distinguish what fruit it is.

- I have a piece of bread – said Sofia lifting up something that resembled a rock.

- I don’t think that’s even edible – sighted Veanna – It’s good to know there isn’t much trail left.

- Where’s Bril? – asked Ophelia.

- She went looking out for something to eat, but she’s been long too much. I lost sight of her a while ago. – said Veanna getting on her feet, trying to see at a distance.

- At the same time, Sofia got on her feet and walked a few feet to shout for Bril. All three of them waited in silence but there was no answer.

- I don’t like this, we have never separated this much – said Veanna, leaving Ophelia a hand, who was getting no her feet too.

They walked a few steps more, and this time all three at once yelled her name. They looked in every direction impatient, just when a growl made them look at her left.

- Don’t move – said Veanna in a small voice.

A black Wolf growled at them, showing off its teeth, tinted in fresh blood.
