- ¿A quién?

- Bueno...

- Vamos, no te pongas sentimental.

No debes menospreciarte.

- ¿Y siempre lo has dominado?

– preguntó extrañada a Ophelia.

No...

Chapter 5

- What are you talking about? – asked Ophelia worried while Veanna and Bril watched closely.

- As princess of Ceryle, I just can’t leave things the way they are. – said Sofia taking a stand and walking all around the room repeatedly, while turning the ring on her hand in an automated fashion.
- But what do you plan on doing? – Veanna questioned her – they’ve taken over the entire kingdom by now...
- But who? – Sofia stopped abruptly – and why? - you could hear anger in her voice – it’s my duty and right to take over the throne.
Ophelia looked at her uneasy. She knew that when Sofia had her mind set on something, it wouldn’t be easy to make her change her mind.
- So you want to go back, so they can kill you this time– said Bril sarcastically – Because I’m pretty sure that’s what they’ll do once they see you. – alleged seriously.
Sofia and Ophelia looked back at her. The first one with a look of exasperation, while the other with a visible preoccupation.
- Sofia, you know you’re like my sister, I understand how you feel and I support you with every decision you make… but Bril’s right, what you plan on doing isn’t reasonable. – said Ophelia choosing her words carefully.
- It’s not as if I hadn’t thought of it! – Sofia gave her back to them and took in some air.
She turned around at them, calmer now – I really need to know something. I think about my family, my people, and It’s something I want to do.
- What if instead of going back to Ceryle, you went to another allied kingdom? – proposed Veanna, who until now had been silently thinking.
- Of course! – Exclaimed Sofia – I could go to Sorex, we’ve always maintained a good relationship between both kingdoms… – she said, mostly to herself than the others – I could ask for support! I can’t see how this couldn’t work out.
- But... How will you prove you are the princess? – asked Veanna.
- With this – Sofia extended her hand so Veanna could see Ceryle’s crest engraved on her golden ring. – It’s our family crest. Father gave it to me as a present when I turned eighteen. Leonardo got one too, but not as a ring, as this instead…– she showed them her brother’s sword’s handle, all the while tears began forming in her eyes, though she didn’t let herself drop one and added – There is no way I’ll let my family’s memory get lost.
Veanna upon seeing her so decided couldn’t do anything else, except let herself get caught up by those feelings. Her own situation was uncertain being so far away from home. And even though she had left her home for reasons she could only see as vain now, and had been entwined in Ceryle’s attack, for what she felt ashamed even though she didn’t know what she was getting herself into, she decided to amend for her time lost.
- I’ll go with you – she said toward Sofia, who looked at her shocked – it would be unwise to go alone. Besides I feel it’s the right thing to do. I’ll go with you, to ensure you arrive safe with the kings of Sorex – she finished extending her hand sincerely, which Sofia rushed to shake happily.
- Thanks a lot Veanna, It’s very noble of you. – She smiled gratefully and turned to Ophelia – You’re coming too right?
- What? But I... – she wasn’t very enthusiast by the idea at all though parting from Sofia would be worse.
- You’ve just said it, I can count on your support and now is when I most need it sister... – Sofia hit the spot.
Ophelia stood up in front of her. She gazed at her expression and when both eyes met she was certain that nothing would ever be the same. The Sofia whom she had in front little had left from that young girl with the comfortable and careless life she knew. She didn’t feel that way anymore. This time they didn’t have anyone from whom take shelter, except themselves, she knew that anywhere she went, she would be with her.

- What are you saying Ophelia? – Sofia looked at her hopeful. She knew that if she didn’t go with her, her courage would soon be gone.

But her fears soon faded away when Ophelia shook her head and hugged her. In that hug what both of them knew was sealed without saying a word.
Veanna cleared her throat. She involuntarily attributed any sign of sensibility almost immediately to weakness. That’s the way she had grown up.

- Well then, when shall we part? – she asked to talk about something interesting in her way of seeing things.

- You wont’ be able top go anywhere while you can’t support yourself on both feet without a problem – stated Bril for preoccupation to Veanna.

- In a week it’ll be like new. It doesn’t hurt much anymore! – she rushed to say.
Bril nodded and crossed her arms. She had mixed feelings, because even though it was a relief to think she would go back to her normal day routine, she also felt she had liked spending time with other people. Though she had preferred living alone for a long time, the young girls who abruptly entered her life had made a change in her routine, which for her surprise, had liked.

- If you plan on traveling to Sorex, I’ll go with you for a short part of your journey. Not up to the castle, but at least the nearest town.– said Bril more in an imperative tone, than as a suggestion.

- Bril, you’ve been so kind with us, How can we ever repay you? – Said Ophelia taking her hands.

- It’s nothing really... – she answered smiling, taking her hand away from her. – I’ll guide you to the outsides of the woods. You wouldn’t ever get out, even with the best of luck.

- It’s decided then – said Sofia satisfied – we’ll take off in a week.

- We’ll have to prepare some provisions... we’ll be traveling all by foot? – asked Ophelia worried, staring at her worn out shoes.

- No. As soon as we get to the nearest town, we’ll buy horses and shoes – said Sofia.

- With what money, may I ask? – asked Veanna.

- My dress and shoes had details in gold. I took them out and collected them –she answered as she showed them – This, along with what we can take out of Ophelia’s dress and necklace, I think we’ll have enough to buy what’s most necessary.

- Perfect – smiled Veanna, enthusiastic by the idea of traveling, while Bril extend a used map over the table. Sorex’s kingdom extended unto the northeast.

- I think we’ll make a week’s worth of trip, that is, if we don’t stop too much. – She calculated – one week and a half if not. There’s a little parish near the forest’s perimeters, there on forth you can go alone.

- Seems fine by me – said Sofia nodding, while taking a look unto the map, just as the others.

As soon as Veanna healed perfectly, they packed their bags, being careful not to overload and took on the journey.
~

During the third day they walked in silence like most of the time. Ophelia went on front, clearing with agile movements the way through the forest followed by Bril who indicated what direction to take, without being surprised of the supernatural ability of the young girl. As few steps behind walked Veanna and Sofia.

- I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t aim at that tree – said Sofia, indicating at the distance with a challenging tone.

- What the hell not… – Veanna responded laughing while she shot and it hit the target - you see? - she added with pride.
- Mmm... but I know you won’t get the one behind that one... – Sofia challenged again, visibly amused, while Veanna tightened her arc once more.
- Enough already – Bril turned to them – You are going to use up all the arrows on your foolishness.
The Young girl lowered her arc, and stored her arrow mad, but remaining in silence. They continued walking and after a while, Sofia and Veanna left a considerable distance between them so they could talk without bothering them.
- ¿How is it you decided to leave home? – asked Sofia.
- Well it wasn’t really under reasonable circumstances. I insisted on going after someone.
- Who?
- Well... – Veanna seemed ashamed - ...his name is Hallacair and you could say we were almost like a couple.
- He asked your hand in matrimony? – asked Sofia with curiosity.
- That’s absurd!... it was to soon for that! – she answered awkwardly – but we did spend a lot of time together. I never felt so at home as I felt with him, we knew each other for so long now. But he left so suddenly. To study in the Porcus kingdom, that’s all he said. After a while I decided to go after him. Find him, I don’t know... it wasn’t very clever now that I think about it.

- If you where traveling towards Porcus...How did you end up in Ceryle’s tournament?

- You see, I found myself really close to Porcus’ and Hyla’s border when in a pub, I found out about the tournament. I wasn’t really sure I wanted to be a part of it, it wasn’t in my plans as I said. But I met a man who asked me to participate. Well, he didn’t exactly ask me to participate...I can’t really explain it. It was confusing but I think I said, what the heck, after all I do have talent. When I won the tournament I really felt glad, it was the first one a participated in, outside of my kingdom. But then the attack occurred and I... – She found herself forced to stop, she didn’t want to talk about what she had done, well even for her it all seemed so distant and the reasons so unsure.

- You where lucky to come out alive... – said Sofia unknown to Veanna’s indecision – I’m really glad you could. – she smiled at her – I don’t know what would have happened to us if we hadn’t found you or Bril...

- Come on, don’t get sentimental. It’s too soon for that – said Veanna giving her a pat on her back, subtracting importance from it – you’d better think about what you’ll be saying to the kings at Sorex.

- For my brother, all of this would have been so easy. He had been prepared for any situation... where as I wasn’t educated for anything except marriage.

- And yet your here and not everyone could accomplish this.

- I know I’m doing this because it’s my duty and I don’t want to let my family down. But at the same time, I don’t want to let myself down. Alot of times I felt so unsatisfied with my role as princess and now that I‘ve got this opportunity in front of me I ... I don’t know, I didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

- I Think you’re ready – said Ophelia without distracting herself from her movements and taking out of the way bushes and branches. The distance between them had shortened without even knowing and they had been listening to their conversation.

- I wouldn’t feel like this if you weren’t here – answered Sofia kindly
~

- From where does your ability come from, Ophelia? – asked Bril intrigued, on their fifth day of travel.
- I inherited from my mother, and she from her’s – she answered as if it was the most natural thing in the World.

- And you’ve always dominated it?

- Oh no, when I was little, I didn’t even know I had it. It wasn’t until I was 10 years old that I found out by accident. Dad had always hoped that I hadn’t inherited, but just then my father decided that we would move as a measure of precaution. Not even a year had passed since my mom’s hanging, on account of witchcraft.

- I’m sorry... – said Bril fearing having brought up bad memories.

- Don’t worry, I don’t really remember much. I’ve learned to rely on my father – she made a pause to commemorate her father’s memory with care – Sofia, Leonardo and their brother’s who were born after, became my family.

- You knew all of this then? – Veanna asked Sofia, who shook her head – How is it that you ended up living in the castle? – she asked towards Ophelia.

- Well, dad used to be captain of Ceryle’s army on that time and it wasn’t long before he became in the royal counselor.

Veanna stopped abruptly upon hearing her words. Scenes from the tournament cleared up her mind. “Kill the royal counselor” she had been ordered the night before the end of the tournament, giving her motives she couldn’t remember anymore. And she had obeyed. Why had she obeyed? Had she been forced? No…They were to give her the whereabouts of Hallacair in exchange…but killing someone? She remembered the man who with only his words had bent her will and fogged her common sense for a few moments. At the end, she had only been used, since they left her alone in the woods.

But even as confusing as it was, nothing would ever change the fact that she had killed Ophelia’s father.
